John Kirkpatrick began his craft by whittling canes from interesting pieces he found in the woods to setting up a workbench on his back porch, then buying a few hand tools and carving spoons and scoops and gifting those items to family. He eventually turned his garage into a workshop and graduated to lathe work. All are self taught skills. John is always amazed at what Mother Nature gives him with a piece of wood so he likes to leave live edges, knots and any natural character in the wood when possible. Most of his wood is sourced from the Greers Ferry Lake area from drought stricken, dead or damaged trees that John likes to cut himself. Since 2013 John has traveled to craft shows around the region selling his rustic, one of a kind woodworking. Though he started with spoons, lathe and wood carving is the direction his woodworking is currently. John makes bowls, mortar and pestles, decorative items like vases with an occasional charcuterie board.
