From his studio atop Wildcat Mountain, Ed’s photos tell a story of the rugged and sometimes delicate beauty of Arkansas. Images of dramatic vistas and intimate wildlife scenes contrast with photos recording the subtle changes of light and shadow on delicate leaves and flowers that appear in his work.

I, like so many, can easily get caught up in the grandeur of nature: vast sunsets or sweeping views. Often, however, the real beauty is in the smallest detail: a single leaf, water drops on petals. If I can take a picture that captures the joy that nature gives me, and with that image, express it to another, then I have accomplished my goal.

I can still re-live old memories from the pictures taken with that simple camera. For me, this was what photography was about…capturing memories. I pursued photography in this manner during the 37 years of my working life but after retirement I was moved to capture memories in ways that emphasized the natural beauty of the subject. In my case, the subject is usually a landscape near Mountain View or the surrounding area of north Arkansas. I try to provide the pictures that you would take if you had time to wander around the mountains yourself. I hope you will visit Mountain View and take many good memories back home with you.

Howard Harper and his wife Maggie Lusk have spent countless days and many miles traveling Arkansas recording the state’s natural beauty and wildlife, and discovering its history. They produce images as photographs, note cards, and bookmarks.

Natural settings are of particular interest and their photos illustrate the architecture of the state in its various forms. Wildlife and nature shots capture rare moments with exquisite detail and rich color. And, while Arkansas is a special focus of their efforts, wherever they travel, cameras are always in hand to catch that perfect shot.

Maggie’s became serious about photography in the mid-1980s, but Howard’s interest started much earlier. “I was going through some old photos my father had taken and one of them was of the old ‘Morning Call’ coffee shop in the French Quarter of New Orleans. I turned it over and much to my surprise my father had written on the back: November 12, 1942, I held Howard on my shoulders and he took this photo. I was almost 6 years old. This photo made me realize how much I enjoyed photography.”
