Printmaking

The impetus for Daniel Adams’ prints is finding relationships between images or ideas. Most of his work does not contain human figures, but they are never very far away. “I am interested in how we as people shape our environment and what that says about us as individuals and, on a larger scale, as human beings.

As a printmaker, woodblock prints are his favorites. They begin as a reverse drawing on a block of wood so that the final composition appears as a ‘positive.’ Then non-images areas are cut away and the remaining raised areas are covered with a thin layer of ink. Paper is placed on the block and pressure applied to transfer the image. In some cases, Daniel hand colors the black and white images to provide interest and dimension. He also produces etchings, lithographic and silkscreen prints.

I make art because that is the way I make sense of life. God gave me talent and it is so much a part of me that I cannot imagine not creating images.” Daniel is a full professor in the Department of Art and Design at Harding University. He lives with his wife, Meagan, at McRae, Arkansas.

David studied with Joe Coulter at Henderson State in Arkadelphia, while Becki received instruction at the Berkeley Potters’ Guild in California. Their paths converged in 1984 at the Ozark Folk Center where David had been the potter for 6 years producing a complete line of decorative functional stoneware under the name American Beauty Pottery. They continued to demonstrate pottery at the Folk Center while building a studio adjacent to their home near the Court Square in Mountain View, with assistance from an Individual Artist Fellowship David received from the Arkansas Arts Council. In 1996 the Dahlstedts left the Ozark Folk Center to become independent studio potters. They now market their work under the name Mountain View Pottery at galleries and shops in Mountain View, Eureka Springs, and Little Rock. They make the Clinton Presidential Logo mugs which are sold exclusively at the Clinton Museum Store. David has received numerous awards for his pottery, has taught workshops at the Arkansas Arts Center, and has work in the permanent collection of the Decorative Arts Museum in Little Rock.

David and Becki are participating artists on the “Off the Beaten Path” Studio Tour which takes place the third weekend of September in and around Mountain View. For information on the tour visit the website Off The Beaten Path Studio Tour.

Painting

Deborah studied art and art history in college at Western State College in Gunnison, CO and at the Fort Wayne (IN) Art Institute. “Art has always been a part of my life; in my education, in my appreciation of, in my own artistic creations, and in my personal collections”.

Deborah worked for several years representing artists at the various industry trade shows through out the United States. It was during this time that she became interested in the plight of the endangered Mountain Gorilla and the people of Rwanda after the 1994 Genocide. Through this interest, Deborah wrote a children’s book about the Dian Fossey’s legacy of protecting the Mountain Gorilla and wanted to illustrate the book herself. It was then that she “dusted off “ her own artistic talent and began painting mountain gorillas using photographs provided to her by Ruth Keesling of the Morris Animal Foundation and by Robert Campbell, well known National Geographic photographer. After completing eight paintings of mountain gorillas, Deborah painted a tiger, then a lion and from then on she was hooked. While wildlife remains her favorite subject, over the years, she has become open to any subject that calls out to her to paint including people, landscape and still life. Deborah uses her own photographs for reference material and carries her camera with her everywhere. She has donated work to several fund raising events for wildlife conservation and local organizations.

Deborah chose pastel as her medium because she admired the work of the pastel artist she represented as well as the great Masters. “I work on a special purchased veloue paper. I love the soft effect I get especially doing wildlife. I also work on Walis sanded papers and Pastelboard. I cover my entire surface with pastel and consider my work to be a painting and not a drawing” ( the category most art shows place pastel work in. Deborah loves to work in the Nu Pastel and various brands of soft pastel and combine both in many paintings. “I like pastel because I can work on a painting for five minutes or five hours”. She always has a painting in progress on the easel. Deborah has studied under Award winning artists Stephen Quiller; (Master Artist and Author) Tucker Smith, (Master Artist) and Lee Kromschroeder (Master Artist) at the prestigious Jackson Hole Artists’ Workshop (1999, 2000). Her work has been accepted in juried and non juried shows in the Northwest and other parts of the United States and has won many ribbons and cash awards. Deborah’s work hangs in private and corporate collections through out the United States, Canada, France and South America. She is a past member of the Northwest Pastel Society. And current member of The Arkansas Craft guild. In September of 2005, Deborah and her husband, Jesse, retired to Mountain Home, AR (from Washington), with three dogs and three cats. They have two grown children.

Fiber Arts

Jeanette Larson’s path to Mountain View, Arkansas and her job as the craft director at the Ozark Folk Center has been as winding, steep and bumpy as the local roads, but her path has a fiber artist has run straight through her life. Jeanette learned to crochet from her grandmother when she was eight-years-old and has rarely put down her crochet hooks since then. She crocheted while on the bench during high school basket ball games and in lecture halls in college. “Crocheting helps me relax and keep still while letting my mind work on things,” she said. Her mom is a talented seamstress who made many clothes for Jeanette and her two brothers. “I learned all the basics of fabric manipulation, fiber behavior and pattern piecing from watching my mother,” said Jeanette.

When Jeanette was 12-years-old she visited her Aunt Jeannie in Boston. Jeannie was learning to weave and Jeanette learned right along with her. Twenty-five years later, Jeannie was going through some life changes and was looking for a home for her looms. She sent her Schacht rigid heddle and 1929 Newcomb rug loom to live with Jeanette.

In 1981, while at Colorado State University, Jeanette began milking in the college dairy. This lead to a life-long love of dairying and in 1982, dairy goats became a permanent part of her life. Having a small farm for the goats led to sharing that life with other animals, and sheep became a natural part of the mix. Starting a family didn’t interupt her straight line journey in developing her fiber arts. In 1987 she juried in to the Colorado Renaissance Festival. Both her chlldren grew up there, spending every summer in the RenFest booth. She won several awards over the years, her favorite was the “2006 Best Artist” award. She’s also won awards for her crochet, weaving and design at the Best of the Southwest Wool Festival in Farmington, NM; Wool Festival at Taos; Estes Park Wool Market; and the National Western Stock Show. She juried into fairs and craft shows from Utah to Louisiana over the years and developed her own distinct style that combines weaving, crochet and a variety of fibers, mostly natural and home-grown.

Professionally, dairy management; providing day care for children; rural postal carrier; fairgrounds management; free-lancing for magazines; working as a reporter; photographer and ad salesperson have all been parts of her life. By 2000, Jeanette was the managing editor for a small agricultural publication group. About that time, all the facets of her life began their push to send her to Mountain View. In 2002, Colorado experienced the worst drought in recorded history, inclucing tree-ring history. Only two-and-a-quarter inches of rain fell on her small farm on the Colorado plains that entire year. Water rationing was strict throughout the state and feed prices soared. Jeanette and her partner, Shawn Hoefer, began looking for a less crowded state that was more suited to farming.

In 2004, Joe Jewell, a long-time Mountain View resident, spent the summer at the Colorado Renaissance Festival playing his hammered dulcimer in front of Jeanette and Shawn’s Common Threads booth. He told them of a wonderful land called “Arkansas” where water falls out of the sky and wood grows on trees. Shawn, a wood worker and fiber arts tools designer, knew better. Wood is a very expensive material that you buy in stores. But, they were intrigued and juried into the Bella Vista Craft Show. It was really love at first show. The people were fascinated and friendly; the land was beautiful and lush; there were more types of trees that you could imagine and the couple had their second best show of the year, sales-wise. In 2006, they visited Mountain View. Joe had told them about the Ozark Folk Center. From before the first visit it was obviously fate. Now, as the craft director of the Ozark Folk Center, Jeanette fits her spinning, weaving, crochet and design time into the edges of her day. Fiber art is still the common thread that ties the rest of her busy life together.

Basketry and Gourds

Traveling with clippers at the ready, Mary Laurie gathers and collects the natural materials she uses for basketry and non-functional gourd vessels. While most of the materials are native grasses, vines, and woods from Arkansas, she explores the use of unusual weaving resources collected wherever she travels as well as found objects and metals. She prefers contemporary to traditional influences.

“Unlike many artists who can labor over a piece to achieve absolute perfection, I have to move quickly. That often leads to unexpected surprises and pieces that morph from the initial design idea to a completely different final product.”
