Lara Sanders baskets and gourds

Building on her Native American heritage, Lara Sanders practices the craft of pine needle basketry and combines those skills with others from her ancestral Cherokee traditions.

She works with Ponderosa and Long Leaf pine needles to weave and sew baskets of different sizes, with and without lids, and add decoration and functionality to gourds. Her commitment to natural materials also includes the use of river cane and reeds and beeswax covered sinew. Lara uses traditional methods to make natural dyes from black walnuts and pine pitch for waterproofing baskets. Importantly, she passes along her knowledge and skills through demonstrations and outreach programs.
