Joyce Campbell collection of gourds

In the hands of Joyce Campbell, a common gourd becomes a work of art. Using locally grown gourds, she cuts, carves, and burns intricate designs and applies paints and dyes to accentuate the features of her sculptural bowls, lidded containers, and other objects. Joyce also includes a variety of natural elements including pine needles and shells, to name a few.

Her designs range from contemporary to traditional and incorporate influences from around the globe. Joyce also combines the use of wildlife painting to create pieces that reflect on the value of a natural world.

“The gourd has been described as Mother Nature’s canvas and challenges the artist on many levels. I feel that I’ve only scratched the surface.” A native of the Netherlands, Joyce participates in gourd festivals and hosts workshops and demonstrations for aspiring ‘gourders.’
