Luke & Willow Block

Luke and Willow say they create their works for art not to be separate from practical use, but to harmonize with it.  Intricate patterns are created by cutting and restacking colored clay into blocks.  These blocks are then sliced into slabs which are hand rolled, shaped and slowly dried.  Dishes are then misted with a clear glaze and single fired with wood and gas.

The firing takes up to 30 hours until the temperature of 2400 degrees is reached.  After a 36 hour cooling period, the door of the kiln is unbricked to reveal “the kiss of the kiln” that has been left on the pots by the flow of the flames.  Willow says “As we work together on this difficult process, I recognize the significance of the hands to create and express human feelings.  May the close relationship between use and beauty make these dishes daily companions to enrich your life.”
